Job Specification

Beginner Weekly Instrumental Classes – GUITAR 
Position: Guitar Tutor Classes 0 and 1; Guitar Tutor Classes 2 and 3
Fee: £44p/h with travel @ £0.45/ mile capped at £25 max per session
Time: Monday 6.30pm – 8.30pm at the MacRobert Building, King Street Aberdeen,
Commitment: 30 weekly classes across the school academic year – Autumn, Winter and Spring Term

About Scottish Culture and Traditions

Scottish Culture & Traditions (SC&T) was formed in 1997 with the aim of advancing the education of the public in Scottish culture and tradition. This is achieved by promoting and celebrating Scottish traditional music, song and dance through engaging, participatory learning experiences. The main aim is to instil a sense of community, enthusiasm and enjoyment among participants. 

SC&T Youth, as an integral part of SC&T, extends this mission to youth aged 6-26 in the North East of Scotland. Launched in 2019, the year round programme of both online and in person activities is dedicated to providing exciting, inclusive high quality opportunities for youth to connect with Scottish traditional music. These opportunities span from from very beginners to advanced players.

About the classes

The weekly beginner classes are designed for total beginners and start at level 0, progressing through to level 3 over 4 terms of classes.

Job Description: Specific tasks

SC&T Youth prides itself on the delivery of inspiring and fun experiences for all participants whilst engaging them in Scottish music.Successful applicants are required to carry out the following tasks:

  • Plan and deliver 10 guided weekly classes in each school term, Autumn, Winter and Spring, 30 classes. 
  • Attend planning sessions and the end of year evaluation meeting.
  • Teach appropriate material for young participants as guided
  • Collaborate with other tutors in the preparation of a collaborative piece for each end of term concert, and if appropriate, prepare a short piece with your own class. 
  • Be willing to attend additional performances as appropriate
  • Be respectful and supportive of the aims of SC&T Youth to create an inclusive, inspiring, creative, safe and positive environment for all involved
  • Follow SC&T’s Safeguarding Policy and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy both of which will be shared with you.

Personal Specification

SC&T Youth is seeking to employ a tutor with a background in the specified subject who has experience of working in a participatory and collaborative setting. 

The tutor will be expected to deliver 30 lessons through a guided course on their specific instrument and work with other tutors collaboratively. 

You will also be expected to attend planning sessions and the end of year evaluation meeting.

We would also welcome an experienced musician who is either a recent graduate, currently studying for a further or higher education qualification in the relevant discipline or someone who is able to demonstrate experience of, and commitment to, working in a participatory setting as a musician. 

You should be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate with young people, have a broad knowledge of your subject with regard to Scottish music, have the ability to manage your time and resources effectively and show flexibility in regard to your work setting. 

Contract and fee

As a self-employed contractor you will be responsible for your own tax and national insurance contributions and will be paid on the submission of invoices submitted at the end of each term or, if required, monthly. Invoices should be submitted by email to youth@scottishculture.org

You are expected to deliver and attend the following:

  • Attend a planning/welcome meeting with other tutors
  • Deliver 10 weekly classes across the school academic year  – 30 classes in total
  • Attend the end of year evaluation meeting 

You will be paid in line with the Musicians Union rate of £44 per hour and be reimbursed mileage at the rate of 45p per mile for car use capped at £25 per session.

Levels Explained

What does level 1 2 3 mean?

These relate to the ability and level the class is aimed at:

0 = Complete beginner – no experience of your instrument.

1 = Beginner – Have only been playing for a short time.  

2 = Intermediate – Have been playing for a while and can play some tunes

3 = Advanced – Can play and learn tunes competently 

0/1, 1/2, 2/3 etc = Both levels are accommodated

No level indicated = This course is open to all levels but some experience is recommended.
